White Space in Data Centers
“White space” is a term used in the data center industry to describe the space allocated primarily for IT equipment. It is the space typically occupied by server cabinets, storage, network gear, racks, air-conditioning units, and power distribution systems.
Key reasons for fire risks include:
• High energy densities
• Combustible materials
• Hot spots, due to inadequate cooling
• Manufacturing defects, mechanical damage, component degradation, and malfunctions
• High air movement
• Dark centers with a limited staff to respond early on to developing events
